Editor’s Note: What is a BioSymbol©?
A Biosymbol © is an endemic, living (or now-extinct) being which has been chosen to represent some aspect of a national or ethnic culture. For example, the Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States (unofficially since 1782, and official since December 2024 through an act of Congress). Native to North America, the bald eagle represents strength, power, majesty, and freedom – all positive qualities most Americans probably want to associate with the United States. A country or culture can have more than one Biosymbol© and these symbols can be animals or plants.
For the next three months, we will feature the main Biosymbols© for each of the countries of our Sister Cities
The country of Egypt has a number of magnificent Biosymbols: the Nymphaea Lotus (national flower), the Doum Palm (national tree), the Steppe Eagle (national bird), and the Scarab Beetle (national symbol).
