The area surrounding Patzcuaro contains many incredible artifacts of the Purépechan Empire (circa 14th century AD), which was the indigenous civilization in what is now the state of Michoacan, Mexico.

These include

Tzintzuntzan (The Place of the Hummingbirds) -the ceremonial center of the Purépechan Empire

Ihuatzio (Place of the Coyotes) – On the southeastern shore of Lake Patzcuaro, this site contains vestiges of ancient human settlements.

Tingambato – 30 minutes by bus from Patzcuaro this site contains a beautiful 7-step pyramid and other artifacts from civilations which pre-date the Purépechan Empire.
