While the French have many interesting cultural traditions around Christmas, I’ve chosen to focus on traditions centered around food.

Like most holidays in France Christmas translates into an elaborate and delicious meal. The French celebrate the holiday on Christmas Eve called Le Réveillon de Noël. If you are ever lucky enough to be invited to such a feast don’t be surprised to spend at least 5 hours at the table (not exaggerating). Each dish is served separately with plenty of time between each course for socializing. Here is a simple menu…

Celebratory Champagne to start

Foie Gras or pâté on toasts

Raw oysters on the half shell (from Brittany)

Escargots de Bourgogne

Garlic Soup

Dinde aux marrons (turkey with chestnut stuffing)

Assorted vegetables

Green salad

Plateau de fromages (cheese platter with at least 5 different cheeses to choose from)

Last but not least Bûche de Noël

Coffee, and regional liqueur follow this delectable meal
