Jack Ding, of Penglai Committee, Sworn in to Sonoma City Council
Jack Ding, a long-time, respected member of the Sonoma-Penglai Sister City Committee, was sworn in on December 7, 2020, as the first Asian American to become a member of the Sonoma City Council.
“As a proud Sonoman, I know who I am and where I came from,” he read from a statement to the council. “I will work hard and serve the community with integrity, diligence and respect.”

Jack was born in China, and being fluent in the Chinese language he has been an occasional interviewee on San Francisco’s Chinese language TV news station KTSF26. Here’s a recent video interview with lots of shots of Jack and Sonoma:
The KTSF video mentions the Sonoma–Penglai Committee’s Wine Country Chinese Legacy Project. A building permit was approved on January 28, 2020, for a ting, a Chinese-style pavilion, in Depot Park, commemorating the Chinese workers in the 19th century who helped to build our wine industry.
