IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE
Sonoma/Ukraine Vigil at City Hall on February 24th Will Mark Two Years Since Russia Invaded Ukraine
On Saturday, February 24, at 6:00 PM, the Sonoma Sister Cities Kaniv Committee will hold a candlelight vigil at City Hall on the Sonoma Plaza, a date that marks two years of the Russian unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022.
Kaniv, Ukraine has been a sister city of Sonoma since 1987 and Sonoma Sister Cities Association is committed to supporting and helping the people of Kaniv and Ukraine during the time of war by raising money for humanitarian aid.
Kaniv is located just 90 miles south of Kyiv on the Dnieper river and is the site of a large hydroelectric plant. Because the plant is part of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, Kaniv has been a prime target for Russian missiles. Their public buildings became refugee and care centers.
Due to the generosity of the Sonoma community, the Sister Cities’ Kaniv Committee has been able to send $138,000 to the City of Kaniv for humanitarian, protective, and medical aid. In addition, hundreds of Bombas socks, underwear and children’s soft toys have been sent to their people.
Please come to the vigil to provide support and strength to the people of Ukraine. Inspirational music will be provided by David Barker and the ZigZag Band. Bring your own candle or flashlight. Dress warmly. Support for the attack on Ukrainian’s freedom and the preservation of their country is needed more than ever.
Donations can be made on the Givebutter Site with a credit card, Venmo, PayPal, or a check payable to Sonoma Sister Cities Association indicating “Ukraine” on the subject line may be mailed to SSCA/Kaniv Committee, PO Box 1975 Sonoma, CA 95476. Sonoma Sister Cities Association is a registered non-profit 501(c) (3) organization, Federal I.D. # 68-0108056.
