Sonoma Sister Cities Association is pleased to announce the winners of the Excellence in Foreign Language Scholarships for 2023. Both winners are Sonoma Valley High School graduating seniors, and each award is $1500. The first recipient is Derek Hernandez-Alonso, 16, GPA 4.3 (weighted) who studied AP Spanish and Literature. He will be attending UC Berkley, study human biology and language minor (Spanish and Portuguese).
The second recipient is Vince Viojan Basada, 17, GPA 4.24 (weighted), who studied four years of French; he was also awarded the Seal of Biliteracy in recognition of his proficiency. He’s interested in social and political issues, and would like to major in International Relationships and Broadcast journalism while attending UC Davis.
SSCA President George McKale and SSCA Youth Outreach Chair Gigi Pfleger presented the awards during the 2023 SVHS Awards ceremony on May 31st.
