The Sonoma – Tokaj Sister Cities Committee Presents a Hungarian Musical Culture Event: “The Musical Genius of Zoltán Kodály” on Saturday, 4 November 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Burlingame Hall (252 West Spain Street, Sonoma).  The suggested donation for this event is $20.00/person.

Background on Zoltán Kodály (1882 – 1967): He was the famous Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, teacher, and philosopher. He is well known internationally as the creator of the Kodály method of music education. The Sonoma -Tokaj Sister City Committee offers this program of brief lectures and musical performances to honor this famous Hungarian!

János Horváth, Professor Emeritus of Music,  University of Calgary,  will present Kodály’s life and accomplishments. He and Marni Strome, music educator and graduate of the Kodaly training, will describe the internationally known Kodaly Method of teaching music.  The Kodaly Method laid down a set of principles for music education which is still used today. This approach to music teaching is based on the “musical mother tongue” of the students—on their own folk music. This forms the starting point for learning musical literacy which eventually leads to an understanding and appreciation for music of all styles, genres, and cultures.

Also performing is the award-winning choral organization Young Musicians Chorus from Berkeley—lead by Betsy Marvit, conductor, and music educator. This cultural and musical event will close with a lovely piano piece by Kodály, played by Hyunjoo Chung, PhD of Musical Arts — who has performed across the US and Asia.

There will be complimentary light refreshments. Local wine is available for a $5.00 donation.  Space is limited so reserve your ticket today.
