On October 23, 70 years ago (1956), students and workers rose up against the communist dictatorship in Hungary and demanded their freedoms. It began as a peaceful demonstration but ended in violence. The freedom fighters were successful in taking over the government. Hungary saw 18 days of freedom before the Russian tanks came full force on November 4 to crush the freedom fighters. Thousands lost their lives fighting to free the country of Russian occupation. Over 200,000 fled the country and were taken in around the world and given refuge.
This documentary commemorates that event and all those who lost their lives for freedom. Torn from The Flag: A Film by Klaudia Kovács, documents the international decline of communism and includes archival material, interviews with Hungarian freedom fighters, former political prisoners and well known dignitaries from the Cold War era.
