On March 17, 2016, a small crowd gathered on Highway 12 in Sonoma at the north end of Traintown to witness and cheer the installation the first of two new Sonoma Sister Cities Association signs. The old signs were faded and out of date as they featured only the first four of the current seven Sister Cities partnerships the City has formed.

The project was funded by the City of Sonoma and involved detailed coordination between Dan Takasugi/City Engineer, Hans Steuck/Vice President of SSCA, and Robert Sanders, of Robert Sanders and Company, who donated his time and skill as the graphic artist. The project took one year from start to finish.

Vice President Steuck was on hand to witness the sign installation on March 17, and he commented “With the addition of three new Sister City partnerships in China, Egypt, and Hungary, the City of Sonoma and SSCA continue the mission of creating international bonds at the city to city level. These signs attest to the successful expansion of the Sister Cities International mission of promoting peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation through citizen to citizen diplomacy one community, one individual at a time.”

The second sign was installed several days later on Highway 12 adjacent to Maxwell Center. This means that when visitors approach Sonoma from either direction, they are informed about the City’s international partnerships.
