When you walked into the back presentation room at Vintage House, you knew everyone was excited to hear what Alexandra Lawrence had to say about “Rethinking Women: A Look at Female Painters and Poets in Renaissance Italy “.  This event, sponsored by the Sonoma Sister Cities Association Sonoma-Greve Committee drew eighty eager people on the evening of Wednesday, August 16th.

Ms. Lawrence first defined the dates that typically encompass the Renaissance (1400 – 1527 AD) and then proceeded to explain why most historians ignored the contributions of female artists whose work emerged a bit later.  In fact, you could say that the study and appreciation of Renaissance female artists is in fact undergoing its own renaissance in the modern world.

Alexandra focused on four artists in particular:  Vittoria Colonna, Veronica Franco, Lavinia Fontana, and Sofinisba Angueso.    She made the time period vivid and lively, and the audience responded by asking lots of questions.  This was a delightful event; stay tuned for the next Sonoma-Greve Committee event.
