Sonoma, CA September 2, 2015
The Sonoma-Tokaj Sister City Committee is proud to announce the arrival of Hungarian viticulture intern Daniel Kovacs in Sonoma on Tuesday, August 26. Mr. Kovacs will be working at Buena Vista Winery as their harvest cellar intern; his duties will include all aspects of making wine: crushing, racking, pressing, cleaning, pumping over, punching down, and barrel-filling.
Mr. Kovacs is the second Hungarian Wine Intern brought to Sonoma by the Tokaj-Sonoma Association, and a portion of the cost of his trip to Sonoma has been underwritten by this local non-profit—-one of the seven sister committees that comprise the Sonoma Sister Cities Association.
“We are excited and pleased to have this opportunity to host a wine student from Tokaj” says Joan Toth, Co-Chair of the Sonoma-Tokaj Sister City Commmittee. “This is one of our core goals, and we are grateful to the Tokaj-Sonoma Association for sending us Daniel!”
Members of the public can meet Mr. Kovacs at a fundraising event on Saturday, November 14 from 6pm to 9pm at Burlingame Hall in Sonoma: “An Evening in Tokaj.” This event will feature a live presentation of Hungarian choral music by the famous Bay Area Hungarian singing group Corvinus Chorus, Hungarian folk dancing by Wagner Haz, authentic Hungarian dishes, and wine from Buena Vista Winery, En Garde Winery, and Obsidian Ridge and Poseidon Wineries.

All proceeds support the activities of the Sonoma/Tokaj Sister City Committee, and will assist in bringing future wine interns to Sonoma. Funds raised also help the Committee with its other major project: sending Santa Rosa Junior Wine College students to Hungary to learn how wine is made in the top wine regions. In 2014 the Sonoma-Tokaj Sister City Committee, in connection with the Tokaj-Sonoma Association, sent two SRJC wine students to Hungary, where they earned extra credit and worked in vineyards and wineries.
The Sonoma-Tokaj Sister City Committee operates under the auspices of the Sonoma Sister Cities Association (SSCA), a registered nonprofit organization in the City of Sonoma.
